The four stages
Foundation → Development → Performance → Elite
Players move through stages by competence, not just age. A coach assesses readiness at each step, no one is rushed, and late starters are welcome. Ages below are typical, not strict.
STAGE 1
Foundation
Typically ages 6-10 · or any new starter
Skill benchmarks
- Agility, balance & coordination, the athletic ABCs
- Continental & eastern grips; can rally 5-10 balls cooperatively
- Underarm serve, basic scoring, court awareness
- Plays with red & orange balls (ITF Tennis 10s)
Training focus
- Fun first, build a love of the game and consistent attendance
- Fundamental movement & basic stroke shapes
- 2-3 short sessions a week; lots of games, not drills
Competition
- In-academy red/orange ball festivals & mini-tennis
- Club fun-days, team formats, no knockouts
Coach-led plan
- Track enjoyment & attendance over results
- Simple skills checklist; introduce good habits early
STAGE 2
Development
Typically ages 10-14
Skill benchmarks
- Transition through green ball to the yellow (full) ball
- All strokes with control; topspin & slice basics; full serve
- Singles & doubles tactics; good rally tolerance
- Recognised footwork patterns & recovery
Training focus
- Technical consolidation & simple tactical patterns
- Physical literacy; introduce match routines (mental basics)
- 4-6 sessions/week including regular match play
Competition
- Club & state junior opens; U12 / U14 age-group events
- Regional junior series, build match volume
Coach-led plan
- Individual Development Plan (IDP) with periodised blocks
- Phone-video review & termly goal setting
STAGE 3
Performance
Typically ages 14-17
Skill benchmarks
- A clear weapon; serve+1 and return+1 patterns
- Point construction under pressure; tournament toughness
- Strong physical base; roughly UTR 6-10
- Competitive at national junior level
Training focus
- High-performance training with growing specialisation
- Strength & conditioning, mental performance, nutrition
- 15-20+ hrs/week, periodised around the competition calendar
Competition
- National Junior Championships (U16 / U18)
- ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors in Africa, J30 (entry) & J60
- CAT / African junior circuit, start an ITF junior ranking
Coach-led plan
- Full annual periodised plan & travel calendar
- Ranking targets; build a UTR & recruiting profile for scout visibility
STAGE 4
Elite
Typically ages 16+ · top juniors → pro / college
Skill benchmarks
- Established ITF junior ranking; roughly UTR 11+
- Deep runs at J60, J100+; national team selection
- Recruitable for US college or ready to transition to pro events
Training focus
- Fully individualised programme with a support team
- International competition blocks; load & recovery management
- Dual pathway: ITF pro tour or US college scholarship
Competition
- ITF Juniors J100, J500 & African Junior Championships
- ITF World Tennis Tour pro events (M15 / W15)
- Davis Cup / Billie Jean King Cup pathway; college showcases
Coach-led plan
- Pro-vs-college decision support; scholarship & agent navigation
- Full team (S&C, physio, mental) and a realistic funding strategy
