The AllONDECK Player Development Pathway

A realistic, Africa-focused route from a child's first rally to ITF Africa tournaments and beyond, built around the courts, budgets, and communities players actually have. Four clear stages, honest benchmarks, and a plan for every level.

The four stages

Foundation → Development → Performance → Elite

Players move through stages by competence, not just age. A coach assesses readiness at each step, no one is rushed, and late starters are welcome. Ages below are typical, not strict.

STAGE 1 Foundation Typically ages 6-10 · or any new starter

Skill benchmarks

  • Agility, balance & coordination, the athletic ABCs
  • Continental & eastern grips; can rally 5-10 balls cooperatively
  • Underarm serve, basic scoring, court awareness
  • Plays with red & orange balls (ITF Tennis 10s)

Training focus

  • Fun first, build a love of the game and consistent attendance
  • Fundamental movement & basic stroke shapes
  • 2-3 short sessions a week; lots of games, not drills

Competition

  • In-academy red/orange ball festivals & mini-tennis
  • Club fun-days, team formats, no knockouts

Coach-led plan

  • Track enjoyment & attendance over results
  • Simple skills checklist; introduce good habits early
